SummaryThe course consists of an extended research project in an area of contemporary chemical physics research. The aim is to acquire the necessary skills to perform chemical or physical research in a professional academic research environment. The research project forms part of the Honours curriculum for students on the BSc degree programme in Chemical Physics.
Course description During the research project the student is required to review the background of the area, and to carry out appropriate experimental or theoretical work. The supervisor and senior researchers from the research group will give guidance and feedback at several stages throughout the duration of the project. Towards the end of the project the student will present and their research to a small audience, and also write a project report.

The research project is carried out in the research group of a member of the academic staff in the School of Chemistry or School of Physics and Astronomy. The initial direction of the research project is defined in preliminary meetings with the academic supervisor.

Additional Information (Assessment) The course is comprised of a literature comprehension and précis exercise, a literature survey related to the theme of the project work, an oral presentation, a research project and associated written project report. Full details of the assessment of each element of the course and the corresponding performance descriptors and given in the course book.
Feedback Feedback will be available on a day-to-day basis as arranged with senior researchers and the academic supervisor. It is expected that the student will be pro-active in seeking and acting on feedback from members of the research group. The student and supervisor will meet to review progress at the end of Semester 1. Written and oral feedback on drafts of the oral presentation, literature comprehension and précis exercise, literature survey and project report will be available to allow the student to mature their presenting, writing and reporting skills.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically evaluate and interpret research literature in areas related to the project and prepare a written literature survey.
  2. Obtain, analyse, and critically appraise and interpret scientific results.
  3. Plan, execute and develop a project of research, working under supervision in a professional research environment.
  4. Demonstrate originality and creativity in developing solutions to problems arising in scientific research.
  5. Deliver an oral presentation of the research to a non-specialist scientific audience and write a detailed research report that demonstrates understanding and analysis of the results of the research.
