SCQF Credits40 ECTS Credits20
SummaryThe course consists of an extended research project and an associated grant proposal writing exercise in an area of contemporary chemical physics research. The aim is to acquire the necessary skills to perform chemical or physical research in a professional academic research environment. The research project forms part of the Honours curriculum for students on the in-house MChemPhys degree programme in Chemical Physics.
Course description The student will write a grant proposal related to the theme of their research project. During the research project the student is required to review the background of the area, and to carry out appropriate experimental or theoretical work. The supervisor and senior researchers from the research group will give guidance and feedback at several stages throughout the duration of the project. Towards the end of the project the student will present and their research to a small audience, and also write a detailed project report.

The research project is carried out in the research group of a member of the academic staff in the School of Chemistry or School of Physics and Astronomy. The initial direction of the research project is defined in preliminary meetings with the academic supervisor. The project extends over Semesters 1 and 2.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Plan, execute and develop a project of research, working with substantial autonomy in a professional research environment.
  2. Obtain, analyse, and critically appraise and interpret scientific results.
  3. Write a grant proposal that demonstrates understanding of the practical and financial aspects of research, identifying potential beneficiaries and pathways to impact of the research proposed.
  4. Deliver a professional presentation and defence of the research to a non-specialist scientific audience.
  5. Write a detailed report that demonstrates advanced understanding in an area of contemporary chemical physics research and an original critical analysis of the research results.
Reading List
