SummaryThe course provides training in the searching, reading and critical assessment of primary scientific literature. Students produce a review article on a subject normally in the area of the research project to be carried out in the final year. The course forms part of the Honours curriculum for students on the in-house MChemPhys degree programme in Chemical Physics.
Course description Critical appraisal of the literature is a key aim of this course. The results of the literature search are condensed into a report, which is presented in the form of a professional review article. The course extends over several weeks. The topic of the literature survey is defined in preliminary meetings with an assigned supervisor. Preliminary results are presented as a summary to outline the proposed structure and content of the review. The review then develops through a first and final draft stage before final submission. The supervisor will give feedback and guidance at several stages during the searching and review-writing process. The review article will be assessed independently by the supervisor and a second assessor using a set of marking descriptors.

The course provides a structured introduction to searching the primary literature in order to extract and summarise important results from a wide body of literature.

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking BSc ChemPhys Research Project/Transferable Skills Course (CHPH10004) OR MChemPhysX Research Project (CHPH11002)
Other requirements Must include a weighted average of Grade C or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses, AND a weighted average of Grade D or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses with degree examinations, at the first attempt.

Feedback Feedback on interim reports will be discussed at several meetings with your supervisor throughout the course; you will be expected to use the feedback to develop and refine your review. Feedback on the final review article will be available in the form of annotations to the review and as a written summary from two independent markers.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Define the scope of a scientific literature review given a general problem or area.
  2. Search for literature using academic citation indexing and search services such as SciFinder and Web-of-Knowledge.
  3. Make a critical assessment of results published in relevant scientific papers and reports.
  4. Demonstrate effective time-management and ability to work independently with periodic supervision.
  5. Plan and execute a report on results of the review in written form to a professional standard.
