Summary | Classes will provide an account of major topics in the grammar of English from a cognitive linguistics perspective. Precise topics may vary from year to year, but are likely to be drawn from the following list:
English auxiliaries; transitive and ditransitive clauses; middles; prepositions; phrasal verbs; the structure of English nominals; relative clauses; finiteness; raising and control; information packaging (including clefting); existential constructions. |

(a) a greater understanding of how Modern English grammar works
(b) preparation for more advanced work involving syntactic theories
