| Summary | Classes will provide an account of major topics in the grammar of English from a cognitive linguistics perspective. Precise topics may vary from year to year, but are likely to be drawn from the following list:
English auxiliaries; transitive and ditransitive clauses; middles; prepositions; phrasal verbs; the structure of English nominals; relative clauses; finiteness; raising and control; information packaging (including clefting); existential constructions. |

(a) a greater understanding of how Modern English grammar works
(b) preparation for more advanced work involving syntactic theories
(c) basic grounding in aspects of Cognitive Linguistics, particularly Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar
