SummaryAn extended research project and associated grant proposal writing exercise in chemical physics.
Course description The research projects are carried out in the research group of a member of the academic staff in the School of Chemistry or School of Physics and Astronomy. The student will write a grant proposal related to the theme of their research project in which they will be required to present the aims and objectives, the techniques to be used to achieve those objectives, as well as a clear statement of the beneficiaries and pathways to impact of the proposed research. For the project itself, the student is required to review the background of their research and to carry out appropriate analytical or experimental work, before subsequently writing a report and making an oral presentation of the research before a small audience. The aim is to acquire the necessary skills to perform chemical or physical research in a professional environment. The research project forms part of the Honours curriculum for students on any of the MChemPhys degree programmes in Chemical Physics that DO NOT also include 'with Industrial Experience' or 'with a Year Abroad'.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: CP Symmetry and Structure (CHPH09001) AND CP Kinetics and Catalysis (CHPH09003) AND CP Molecules and Matter (CHPH09002) AND Electromagnetism (PHYS09018) AND Diffraction Physics (PHYS09047) AND Physical Mathematics (PHYS09015) AND Quantum Mechanics (PHYS09017) AND Statistical Mechanics (PHYS09019) AND CP Practical and Transferable Skills (CHPH09004) AND Electronic Methods in the Physical Laboratory (PHYS09023) AND Computational Methods (PHYS09016)

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking MChemPhysX Research Project (CHPH11002) OR BSc ChemPhys Research Project/Transferable Skills Course (CHPH10004)
Other requirements Must include a weighted average of Grade C or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses, AND a weighted average of Grade D or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses with degree examinations, at the first attempt.

Additional Information (Assessment) The course is assessed entirely on the basis of coursework: personal attributes (20%), experimental work (20%), project report (35%), oral presentation (10%) and grant proposal (15%). Feedback Feedback will be available on a day-to-day basis as arranged with senior researchers and the academic supervisor. It is expected that the student will be pro-active in seeking and assimilating feedback as a member of a wider team working in a professional research environment. The student and supervisor will meet to review progress at the end of Semester 1. Written feedback on drafts of the grant proposal and on a draft of the project report will be available to allow the student to develop and mature writing and reporting skills.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a high level of understanding on a topic relating to contemporary chemical physics research.
  2. Plan, execute and develop a defined project of research, working with substantial autonomy in a professional research environment.
  3. Obtain, analyse, and critically appraise and interpret research results.
  4. Deliver a professional presentation and defence of the research to a non-specialist scientific audience.
  5. Write a detailed report that demonstrates advanced understanding of technical aspects of the research undertaken, and an original critical analysis of the research results.
