Year Abroad Work for Degrees in Modern European Languages and Linguistics or English Language (U04290)

? Credit Points : 40  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : PPL-3-YAWMELLEL

This course is intended for students on one of the Honours Programmes in 'Modern European Languages and Linguistics or English Language'. The course is not available to students on one of the 'Linguistics or English Language and Modern European Languages' Honours Programmes, who may take the course U04321 instead, if allowed by the organiser of that course.

Students are required to take courses in Linguistics or English Language at a University in the appropriate country while they are abroad during their third year of study. These courses must be approved by the Head of Linguistics and English Language. If access to appropriate university courses is not possible, a long essay based on independent study (carried out while abroad) may substitute for these courses, at the discretion of the Head of Linguistics and English Language. However, if students write their dissertation in Linguistics or English Language they must obtain marks for this course by taking courses at a university: the 'long essay' option may not be combined with a dissertation in Linguistics or English Language.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : Admission into one of the 'Modern European Languages and Linguistics or English Language' Honours Programmes.

? Co-requisites : Language acquisition through residence/study.

? Prohibited combinations : If students are allowed, under the exceptional dispensation of the Head of Linguistics and English Language, to substitute a long essay for the marks normally obtained from a University abroad, this course may not be combined with the Linguistics and English Language courses U03200 Dissertation Preparation Abroad and U03317 Dissertation Completion following Study Abroad. If the marks for this course are obtained from a University, this course may then be combined with U03200 Dissertation Preparation Abroad and U03317 Dissertation Completion following Study Abroad.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : When access to university courses is not possible during the year abroad, a long essay based on independent study carried out while abroad may substitute for these courses, at the discretion of the Head of the Linguistics and English Language Subject Area. Under these circumstances, students will write an 8,000-word long essay on a topic which is relevant to their degree programme. The topic of the essay should be agreed with the Course Organiser before students begin their third year of studies and the essay should be written during the third year, while abroad. Students will be assigned a supervisor at Edinburgh and will be expected to remain in contact with their supervisor during the year, typically by email. The deadline for submission of the essay will normally be the Monday of Week 3 of the first semester of the students' fourth year of study.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Determined by the particular academic activities selected by students, with the approval of the Head of the Linguistics and English Language Subject Area.

Assessment Information

Courses at the host institution totalling 20 ECTS credits (= 40 Edinburgh credits). The marks gained while abroad will be converted to marks on the Edinburgh scale. The Head of Linguistics and English Language will convene a small group every year, at the start of the year, to convert the marks received while abroad at a University in the appropriate country to the Edinburgh marking scheme; unless there are compelling reasons to the contrary, the conversion will normally be done using the conversion factors as used in DELC.

In exceptional circumstances, as outlined above, an essay of 8,000 words may substitute for the 20 ECTS credits (= 40 Edinburgh credits) in courses. This will be marked by members of staff in LEL using the standard Edinburgh marking scheme.
