English Language 2 (EN0003)

Literary linguistics; pragmatics and discourse; modern English structure; historical English linguistics; sociolinguistic variation in Scots and overseas English.

Students obtaining an average of 60% or above in classwork may be exempted from the degree examination.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. To further understanding of key concepts in areas of formal description fundamental to the analysis of English as a language both of the present day and of the past.

2. To continue to make students aware of and informed about the diversity of English as a world language at social, regional and national levels.

3. To develop a broader and more advanced knowledge of English Language in its historical prespective, both overseas and within the British Isles.
