Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critical knowledge of the principles of planning policy and its implementation and management, including the role of values in formulating, interpreting, implementing and challenging planning decisions, and interpreting and applying the legal and policy frameworks.
- Understanding of how planning policy is developed, implemented and reviewed, from the strategic to the local spatial scale and the importance of time in the planning and development process.
- Appreciation of the various planning challenges facing rapidly urbanising countries
- Understanding of the role of the professional planner in relation to other built environment professions and stakeholders; ethical frameworks in planning practice, including codes of professional conduct; and rights, equal opportunities and diversity in planning practice.
- Ability to synthesise and balance competing perspectives in decision making, and to develop and apply skills of dispute resolution and consensus building.
