Summary | The course has been designed to introduce metrology - the science of measurement - and explore its value for industry, the economy, science and society. It introduces practical guidance that will help students' fundamental understanding of theory and practice of geometrical dimensioning, tolerancing, uncertainty budgets, as well as specific measurement methods. Case study, industrial guest lecturers and video resources will be introduced to this course to provide the real engineering challenges in metrology, and the students will be examined in metrology theory, measurement practice and understanding the role of metrology in digital manufacturing. |
Course description |
The course will be developed to facilitate hybrid teaching and will compromise a series of 6 x 3 hour workshop sessions that will encourage student-centred learning. A combination of technical lectures, guest speakers from industry and practical manufacturing experience will be employed to allow students to make informed decisions regarding the selection and effective implementation of such manufacturing approaches.
Workshop 1: Introduction - basic theory and concepts
Workshop 2: Measurement fundamentals
Workshop 3: Uncertainty budget, tolerancing
Workshop 4: Instrument, process capability
Workshop 5: Measurement in digital manufacture
Workshop 6: Revision
These workshops will be designed so that they can be taught online if necessary.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify what metrology is and its value to macroeconomics, quality of life and science;
- Understand the relevance of dimensional measurement, including the use of dimensional and geometrical tolerances, to all stages of the engineering process;
- Apply fundamental practical guidelines, essential for good measurement practice;
- Describe the measurement challenges in the scientific and industrial programmes.
