| Summary | In this course, students will produce a detailed description and critique of literature relevant to the proposed research and a plan of the work they will carry out for their PhD project. |
| Course description |
One-to-one discussions with project supervisors and a review of the literature surrounding the PhD project will be fundamental to the outcome of the course. Students will prepare a report outlining the background and relevance of the question to Precision Medicine, the approach they will take to address the questions, including the methods and techniques they will use, justification for animal use, an assessment of the funding required, discussion of the ethical implications of their work and how it may impact on society. This report will be presented as a grant proposal.

This course is assessed by a 3000-word project proposal describing a review of current literature on the project, the hypotheses and/or goals, project management, consideration of legal, social, ethical or professional issues particular to the project and a workplan including milestones and estimated timeline.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Develop a structured project proposal
- Outline project/research management issues and potential legal, social, ethical or professional issues
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of Precision Medicine, including thorough knowledge of the literature and a comprehensive/critical understanding of scientific methods and techniques applicable to their own research.
- Critically evaluate current research and research techniques and methodologies, applying this understanding to tackle questions and problems from original perspectives.
