Course description |
This course is designed to allow students to receive credits for participating in, and being assessed for, Level 11 (or equivalent) Mathematics courses that are not normally available on our Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate (MSc) Programmes. Typical examples include, but are not limited to, School of Mathematics Postgraduate Research courses, and external courses run by SMSTC, APTS, NATCOR and similar Taught Course Centres.
Such courses must be assessed 100% continuously, i.e., there must not be a requirement for the student to take an examination, and the results of the course must be available to the School in adequate time for progression and award decisions to be made.
The suitability of the mathematical content, delivery and assessment structure must be agreed in advance by the Year 5 Organiser. In particular, there must not be significant overlap with existing courses available to Undergraduate or Taught Postgraduate (MSc) Students in the School of Mathematics. Additionally, there must be some formal summative assessment, with appropriate quality assurance in place.
Students require the agreement of the Year 5 Organiser before taking this course; see the pre-requisites and prohibited combinations for further restrictions.

Other requirements | This course is designed to allow students to receive credit for participating in, and being assessed for, Level 11 (or equivalent) Mathematics courses that are not normally available on our Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate (MSc) Programmes. Typical examples include, but are not limited to, School of Mathematics Postgraduate Research courses, and external courses run by SMSTC, APTS, NATCOR, and similar Taught Course Centres.
Students must be in Year 4 or 5 of one of the School of Mathematics MMath Programmes, with an overall average of at least 80% in each of the previous Honours Years.
Enrolment on the Advanced Topics course must have the agreement of the Year 5 Organizer. It is expected that this will only be granted if the following criteria are met:
- Students have exceptionally strong previous academic performance.
- Students have sought and obtained written permission from the Course Organizer of the existing Level 11 (or equivalent) Mathematics
course they wish to take through the Advanced Topics route. The Course Organizer should be asked to confirm that the student can
enrol on the course; confirm that the student has a suitable background to take the course; and provide a brief syllabus of the course
and a statement describing the assessment method and breakdown.
- The Year 5 Organizer is satisfied with the mathematical content, mode of delivery and assessment structure of the existing course the
student wishes to take. In particular, the course must not have significant overlap with any other School of Mathematics Undergraduate
or Taught Postgraduate (MSc) courses, including any taken by the student through the Semester 2 version of this course (Mathematics
Advanced Topics (Semester 2) - MATH11250). In addition, the course must not have significant overlap with the student's project or
dissertation topic, although it may be aligned to that topic.
