| Summary | Preparing for Undergraduate Study (PUGS) is a four-week transition course for 2+2 students who have already been accepted onto degree programmes within the College of Science and Engineering. It will prepare you for the transition into UK undergraduate study and help you develop your STEM academic language and literacies skills. |
| Course description |
In PUGS, you will have the opportunity to explore UK STEM academic practices, conventions and language features. You will finish the course with an enhanced awareness of key features of scientific writing, knowledge of how to deliver a science-based presentation and you will have developed transferable skills which will enable you to successfully engage in your chosen academic programme. These skills include the abilities to read and write critically in your discipline, follow an academic lecture, and communicate in academic discussions with your peers.
This course has been specifically designed for students who already have experience of STEM-based higher education and are transitioning to the University of Edinburgh. You will focus on writing skills (common features of UK scientific academic style, clearly describing a process), speaking skills (delivering an oral presentation, communicating in an academic discussion), reading skills (recognising genre, critically evaluating sources), along with listening and notetaking skills. There is also a reflective element of the course, in which you are encouraged to reflect on your learning progress week by week.
PUGS provides extensive opportunities for you to work in small groups with peers and English Language Education teachers. This academic language and literacies course is classroom-based and incorporates intensive small group and whole class activities. There will be short independent study tasks each week. Furthermore, you will participate in 1:1 tutorials with your class tutor to discuss your progress. Additionally, you will receive written and spoken formative feedback and feedforward from both tutors and peers; you will also have ample opportunities for developing transferable skills and autonomous learning strategies. At various stages of the course, you will undergo formative assessment aimed at preparing you for success in your further studies.
