The client consulting project develops student skills in leading and managing creative organisations. In the client consulting project, student teams apply knowledge of creating and capturing value through strategy, law and data literacy to a client led challenge with a cultural organisation.
The consulting project develops key skills:
(1) Examining client specific data to understand their problem and devise solutions that can realistically be implemented given client's financial and human resources and the market in which the client exists;
(2) Gathering information and identifying specific issues, whether digital strategies, international expansion or sustainability, and;
(3) Collaborating as a team to solve complex problems. |
Course description |
The client consulting project develops student skills in leading and managing creative organisations. In the client consulting project, student teams apply knowledge of creating and capturing value through strategy, law and data literacy to a client led challenge with a world class cultural organisation.
Students learn how to:
(a) Work collaboratively and manage themselves to provide a presentation and report to client and;
(b) Interact with clients to gain insight, pitch their ideas and receive client feedback.

Summative Assessment:
The courses will be assessed by means of the following components:
1) Team Client Report (85%)
The report should be no more than 7000 words.
Expands upon presentation to client, outlining clear argumentation and evidence to support proposed solutions. Gives client material artefact to interrogate proposed solutions.
2) Individual Peer Review (15%)
Online Survey accessed via Learn. Each team member evaluates one another based on core dimensions of team charter after presentation and brief are completed. |
Feedback |
Feedback on the formative assessment may be provided in various formats, for example, to include written, oral, video, face-to-face, whole class, or individual. The course organiser will decide which format is most appropriate in relation to the nature of the assessment.
Feedback on both formative and summative in-course assessed work will be provided in time to be of use in subsequent assessments within the course.
Feedback on the summative assessment will be provided in written form via Learn, the University of Edinburgh's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
There are four formative feedback activities to help prepare the students to present to client and submit final report to client:
1) Helping the team establish good working dynamics and relations.
2) Clients will provide feedback on student group's ideas of solutions for the client problem.
3) Formative feedback by academic staff and peers on drafts of the presentations before the client presentation.
4) Presentation to client with Q&A and draft of report. Includes formative feedback from Instructor and clients on presentation, formative feedback from instructor on draft report.
When report is turned in to client, student will receive summative feedback on report from both Instructors and client. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply concepts and frameworks from law, business and EFI to client situations to generate original insights that are appropriate for client's strategies and practices.
- Deal with complex issues, including conflicting client priorities, and make informed judgements in the client situation in the absence of complete or consistent data/information.
- Undertake critical evaluations of client financials, gather and interrogate additional data as needed utilising skills from core EFI courses, and visualise data to offer interpretations of trends and patterns.
- Demonstrate leadership and/or originality in tackling and resolving complex client problem, and engage effectively with group work, set common goals and manage collaboration.
- Learn effective client engagement skills, including how to structure and refine queries, how to listen effectively and focus on client requests for outcomes to meet client expectations, and how to present solutions and analysis to clients.

Reading List
Reading list will depend on client project, who provide background material, clients annual reports and other client specific information, and the students will engage with literature specific to the client project, whether tourism, sustainability, digital strategy or something else. |
