SummaryBuilding on Childhood Studies Work Based Learning 1: Professional development, this course extends students learning to consider organisational development. This course focuses on the organisational development and management roles of professionals who work with children in a variety of statutory and voluntary sector settings. Participants will consider what is involved in building and developing organisations and being responsible for their own and others' work. The emphasis is on applied knowledge and understanding in areas such as organisational structure, developing participative organisations, supervision etc. The skills and activities of management are considered with reference to the current policy context in Scotland and in relation to differing interpretations of the management function.
Course description Work-based learning involves learning closely bound to the work role, which may be located in your current or previous workplace. An important part of work-based learning is that you promote participatory change through your work role.

The major themes covered in the course will be:
- Organisational, leadership and management theory, and its relevance to professional practice
- Analytical frameworks and techniques such as SWOT, PEST, the 7s framework
- Contemporary, creative, innovative and complex approaches to organisational change, leadership and management

Additional Information (Assessment) Assessment 1: 2,500 word essay, 50% of total marks.

Assessment 2: The assessment is split into 2 parts:
Part A - 1,500 words, 30% of total marks
Part B - Students will produce an A1 academic poster to present at conference, 20% of the total marks
Feedback Students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their essay plans through the course assessment workshop. Formal written feedback will be given to each student on their assessments at the end of the course. This written feedback is based on a course-specific marking rubric.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically reflect and assess on their own practice in relation to relevant policies and legislation.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of establishing fair, respectful, trusting and constructive relationships with parents/carers and families, staff and other professionals.
  3. Employ a range of management tools to identify potential areas for change within their setting and devise a plan to implement these.
  4. Critically evaluate the process of change within their setting, linking this to current research literature, and communicate this effectively to a range of actors.

Additional Class Delivery Information Teaching will involve a combination of direct and independent learning, including: lecture workshops, project work, online interactions, web-based research, group collaborative discussion and the setting of individual study tasks that encourage students to contribute to the curriculum by sharing knowledge.
Throughout the BA Childhood Practice you are required to keep a learning journal of how your perspectives of children and young people have developed throughout the course. This journal then becomes your record and enables you to complete reflection tasks throughout your degree.
