| Summary | The course aims to provide students with an introduction to the recent research in development economics.
Depending on teaching staff, the focus will be on some of the following themes:
1) Intra-household consumption decision and income allocation.
2) Risk, risk coping mechanisms (risk sharing, insurance groups, witchcraft, etc.); Informal savings.
3) Formal and informal means of saving: ROSCAs, saving groups, MFI accounts.
4) Introduction to Randomized Controlled Trials.
5) Impact of Microcredit; Impact of Mobile Money.
6) Social protection (conditional/unconditional cash transfers, public works).
7) Education: Keeping children at school and improving learning outcomes.
8) Impact of Foreign Aid on growth and institutions.
9) Health behaviour and behavioural economics (use of bednets, uptake of insurance, adoption of improved technologies , etc.).

| Course description |
The course aims at exposing students to the recent literature in relation to active research areas in the field of Development Economics. There is no textbook being use and students will be required to review salient papers from each topic.
Students will be exposed to a blend of topics and empirical applications enabling them to get a better understanding of the obstacles to economic development.
