Summary | Introduction to Professional & Clinical Skills - the course is the first of progressive courses in each year of the BVM&S degree programme.
Professional skills:
The first year course will cover what is expected of a professional, introduce self-appraisal and recording progress, to be continued in future years. The emphasis will be on establishing an understanding of basic professional attributes and behaviour, with a focus on self-appraisal, group working and study skills. Linkages will be made with other courses where aspects of professionalism are highlighted.
Clinical skills:
The module will introduce students to basic clinical skills and the concept of assessing a clinical case using the SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, plan) approach. GEP classes will focus mainly on developing observation, palpation and auscultation skills relevant to the dog. |
Course description |
This course develops the theme of personal and interpersonal skills and communication skills, with an emphasis on inter-personal skills, client perspectives, the human-animal bond and clinical examination of the dog.

1. Attendance - As for all BVM&S courses you are expected to attend all practical/tutorial classes listed for the course. However for the Professional and Clinical Skills course you must attend a minimum of 75% of these classes to pass this course.Please make sure that you sign the attendance sheet for every class to ensure that we have accurate records of your attendance. If for medical reasons you cannot attend you must inform the school office and your Personal Tutor in writing of your illness and produce a Medical Certificate or self-certification if absence is for a week or less.
2. Successful Completion of online Clinical Skills Assessment recorded on Learn. This is available as an open book assessment on a time release basis on Learn and MUST be completed within the designated 2 week window between 5pm on Friday 17th January and 4.30pm on Friday 31st January 2020.
3. Successful Completion of DrugCalc all 4 parts recorded on Learn with 100% correct answers (multiple attempts are allowed for each part). To be completed during academic year 2019-20 but before 4.30pm on Wednesday 6th May 2020
4. Portfolio Submission - A complete portfolio MUST be handed in before 4.30pm on Wednesday 6th May 2020.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Summarise the personal attributes and behaviours required to be a successful veterinary professional, with awareness of the importance of e-professionalism, teamwork, effective time management, independent learning, financial awareness and maintaining health and wellbeing
- Reflect on the workload and study skills differences when transitioning from school to university and select appropriate resources to support this transition
- Demonstrate how to perform a routine health check consultation on a dog, integrating theoretical knowledge of behaviour, husbandry and nutrition, with the communications skills required to ¿take a history¿ alongside practical skills to facilitate a clinical examination
- Confidently demonstrate a range of Year 1 appropriate common clinical techniques, including drug dose calculations and administration, bandaging, suturing, and diagnostic sample collection on veterinary simulators and mannequins in the clinical skills lab environment
- Reflect on progress in Year 1 academically, practically and personally, with specific considerations given to EMS placements, time/stress management, communication skills and academic performance, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and be able to communicate these effectively in a variety of formats (e.g. in an essay and as part of a portfolio)
