SummaryThe course provides the knowledge and understanding of the principles of crop production required to successfully grow and manage a range of arable and forage crops.
Course description The aims of the course are to develop an understanding of the systems used to produce major arable and forage crops. By establishing the principles of crop management using examples from combinable and non-combinable crops and rotational and permanent grassland, the course will enable students to apply their understanding to other less widely grown arable and forage crops including novel crops. The course will cover the following:

Combinable and non-combinable arable crops: rotation design, soil fertility crop establishment, nutrition and fertilizer requirements, crop protection, product handling, storage, crop quality and market requirements.
Rotational and permanent grassland: sward establishment, growth and development of sward components (e.g. grasses and legumes), factors affecting sward composition and its dynamics, nutrition and fertilizer requirements, crop protection, grazing management, silage and hay production

This course will be delivered by a series of lectures, tutorials, field visits and practicals.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Explain the principles of crop management relating to specific arable and forage crops;
  2. Calculate nutrient requirements for named crops accounting for effects of site, rotation, soil type and management system;
  3. Devise a suitable crop management plan for named crops;
  4. Explain the key factors to be considered when harvesting and handling or storing crop products.
