Summary | Professionalism in nursing encompasses the idea of competent, safe, high quality evidence-based care which prioritises patient safety and dignity and safeguards the public. This course builds on Professionalism 1 and 2 and shifts the focus to clinical decision making. The principles underpinning this complex business include professional judgement and ethical issues. The respect and dignity and quality agendas in health care are also examined as is the integral concept of leadership. Gaining a better understanding of their decision making processes has important benefits for nurses, organisational effectiveness and health outcomes. The course allows for lecture based learning, experiential learning and research enquiry to be explored. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand what is meant theoretically by clinical decision making and professional judgement
- Identify the influences on clinical decision making in the real world of care
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of the potential implications for patients and clients of the clinical decisions made
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of all health care members of the multidisciplinary team in relation to judgments and decisions
- Demonstrate with discernment how decision-making skills might be acquired and better utilised in the health care
