Summary | In the light of the need for high quality and safe care this course considers the organisational context in which professional nursing takes place. The course content focuses on the importance of teamwork and communication for effective care and addresses the use of protocols and standardised working practices which ensure safe practice. Record keeping, audit and the use of IT in health care are also looked at to consider the part which they play in achieving person-centred care and enhancing quality and safety. |
Course description |
Professionalism in nursing encompasses the importance of competent, safe, high quality evidence-based care which prioritises patient safety and dignity and safeguards the public. This course builds on Professionalism 1 (Introduction to Professionalism) and considers the organisational context in which professional nursing takes place, focusing on the importance of teamwork and communication for effective care, the use of protocols and standardised working practices which ensure safe practice and on record keeping and the use of IT in health care. It also addresses multi-disciplinary working with other professions.
The course provides an understanding of professionalism focusing on legal, ethical, clinical and social competence and an understanding of how communication, record keeping and confidentiality underpin safe and effective practice. A particular emphasis of this course is on developing knowledge and skills in relation to communication and interpersonal skills for teamwork and developing appreciation of the role of leadership, and management.
Teaching and learning includes lectures and interactive seminars. A key driver of this course is for students to reflect upon their own experiences of professional practice and patient care in the light of the research evidence and theory discussed in the course. Practice based learning takes place under the supervision of a registered mentor in both the community and surgical ward settings.
Assessments comprise a formative assessment part way through the course, and a summative asssessement at the end. For the summative assessment, students can choose between a course paper or an exam.
