SummaryA focus on the creative practice of musical composition through exploration into the technique and creative considerations of writing for a specific compositional idiom and notational concerns. The student's own creative work will be developed in individual tutorials. Students are encouraged to make a rigorous exploration of the horizons of their musical experience and interest.
Course description The study and practice of creative music composition.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least three Music courses at grade B or above in Music Theory (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses. All Visiting students should contact the Course Organiser before enrolling on the course.

Additional Information (Assessment) Portfolio submission. Two original and contrasting compositions, to be submitted by end of Semester - worth 80%.
Creative Diary and Class Exercises - worth 20%.
Feedback Students will receive formative feedback throughout the semester in individual tutorials. Class exercises are set by the course lecturer, and these will be discussed during seminars, with verbal feedback from both tutor and fellow students. Summative feedback is provided on submitted portfolios.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the essentials of creative compositional practice and their context. - They will demonstrate the development of individual creative skills and musical issues arising from them. - They will demonstrate core skills of music notation and the preparation of scores and performance materials.
