Academic Description:
The course offers a close study of extended selections from the Hebrew Bible: introduction, translation, and exegetical commentary. The selection will focus on texts of the Pentateuch and as such serves as an introduction to the first part of the Hebrew Bible.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course has two aims: First of all, it focuses on enhancing primary-text language skills for Honours-level students and on introducing them to historical-critical exegesis, while, secondly, it gives an introduction to key texts from the narrative parts of the Hebrew Bible focusing on the Pentateuch.
Student Learning Experience Information:
After an introductory session that gives an introduction to research on the Pentateuch and its themes and texts, the further sessions focus on one central text each. While the first half of the session will concentrate on translation and analysis, the second half will assess central motifs and themes. Interactive elements will enhance the student experience, while a final presentation on one of the course texts will enable the students to demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcome.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have the skills to read and translate Hebrew narrative texts.
- Have a basic understanding of the methods of historical-critical exegesis.
- Have the ability to discuss the history and interpretation of key biblical texts and themes in the narrative parts of the Hebrew Bible.
- Demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings.
- Demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliography.
