Course description Academic Description:
The aim of the course is to consolidate the students¿ understanding of the Hebrew language gained in Introducing Biblical Hebrew, by reading Hebrew Bible texts of varying character and difficulty (prose and poetry) and acquiring the techniques of translating and interpreting such texts.

Syllabus/Outline Content:
Students¿ understanding of the language gained in Introducing Biblical Hebrew is consolidated by an initial review of the grammar covered in that course. Thereafter, students will read the two creation stories (Genesis 1-3), the book of Jonah, a novella (the book of Ruth), and the beautiful and theologically profound poem called ¿ha'azinu¿ (Deuteronomy 32).

Student Learning Experience Information:
This course has a programme of two one-hour reading classes per week. In semester one, students will revise grammar, practise exercises as well as read easier portions of the Biblical texts. In second semester, students use what they have learned for exegesis, reading the Hebrew text and interpreting the passages.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should usually have at least 1 introductory level Divinity/Religious Studies course at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Be able to parse accurately regular and irregular forms of the verb in all conjugations.
  2. Have increased their basic core of frequently used vocabulary.
  3. Have attained fluency in the oral reading of the set passages of Hebrew texts.
  4. Have a good knowledge of text-critical, historical and literary issues related to the passages enumerated in the course description.
