Summary | The course aims to develop the student's skills and knowledge in a specific area of animal bioscience. The student will prepare a research outline based on a laboratory (or bioinformatic) research project and then will carry out the project under the supervision of a member of the Roslin Institute staff. The project will involve techniques including but not limited to those experienced in the first part of the course. The student will work as an independent researcher and interact with other laboratory members as a full member of the group, including presenting at laboratory meetings. The dissertation will be in the format of a short scientific paper for a relevant journal. |

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course, the candidate should have specialised knowledge and experience in the chosen area of animal biosciences. The student will have prepared a scientific paper about the research and will have developed an understanding of how research is carried out and how to write a research proposal.
The candidate should:
o be familiar with an advanced area of animal biosciences;
o be able to make a logical, rational and well-argued hypothesis;
o have developed a feasible research programme to test this hypothesis;
o have justified the research programme;
o have taken into account the ethical issues and paid attention to the principles of reduction, replacement, and refinement in animal research.
o be able to design and carry out experiments independently;
o have a good understanding of the etiquette and requirements for harmonious laboratory work;
o have been part of a research team;
o know how to present the results of a research project in professional format;
