| Summary | This module will examine the Scottish Criminal Justice System and the legal context in which social workers practice. International comparisons with other jurisdictions will be explored, as will the strengths and weaknesses of the Scottish System. Concepts such as discretion, sentencing philosophy, and the independence of the judiciary and sentencing options will be addressed. The policy framework set by government will be examined and the strengths and limitations of government prescribed standards of practice (National Objectives and Standards) will be investigated. |

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to demonstrate the following:
Develop knowledge and understanding of the Scottish system of administering justice.
Consider the legal context in which criminal justice social workers practice, and the importance of maintaining a good working knowledge of relevant legal issues.
Develop a critical appreciation of the role of central government in funding criminal justice social work services and prescribing practice standards.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the policy and legal context of criminal justice social work in Scotland.
Evidence awareness of how other jurisdictions operate.
Demonstrate critical awareness and understanding of the role of central government in directing practice.
