Summary | This course explores the concepts of culture transfer and adaptation in the context of Scottish emigration. The approach is based upon community case studes, mainly in Eastern Canada, though material is included from other areas of settlement. Various genres of oral tradition and aspects of material culture and community life are dealt with, largely from the perspective of a Highlands and Islands background. |

Learning Outcomes
Students will gain an empirical knowledge of settlement history and patterns and the nature of culture transfer and adaptation there; experience in close reading of relevant texts and other sources for the subject; an ability to apply theoretical and analytical approaches to the material; an understanding of the life and culture of diaspora Scots, mainly from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, in comparative contexts.
