Summary | Course content: Cardiovascular Pharmacology A will be organised and examined as a pair with Cardiovascular Pharmacology B. The course will cover the major cardiovascular diseases as well as current and future therapeutic targets. Topics to be covered include the role of the endothelium in protection against vascular disease, antioxidants, and the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis that can result in thrombosis, myocardial infarction and stroke. Prevention of MI by pre-conditioning and consequences of MI, including the development of heart failure will also be discussed. The course will be taught using a combination of traditional lectures, linked tutorials based on analysis of original research papers and demonstrations (e.g. cardiovascular function in man and endothelial function in isolated blood vessels). Students will be expected to contribute to tutorial sessions and will be required to make presentations to their classmates. |
