| Summary | This dissertation workshop provides first-year History PhD students with an opportunity to present research-in-progress papers to an audience composed of peers and to learn how to respond effectively and constructively to feedback. Each first-year PhD student will present a short pre-circulated paper (20 minutes) outlining their proposed research topic, sources, methodology and the location of the topic within the existing historiography. Another member of the group will provide a 10 minute response to this paper. The aim of the course is to develop oral presentation skills, and an ability to offer constructive feedback to peers in a scholarly and professional manner. |

Assessed by one 3,000 paper which will be considered by the first-year review panel (see below).
At present first-year PhD students are required to participate in a review process, involving the two supervisors and an independent panel member. To date the review has largely centred on the evaluation of a draft chapter. This will still form the principal basis for assessment of progress, but all PhD students in History will be required to submit a broader portfolio of work from 2010-11. This will include: (a) a draft chapter; (b) a copy of the coursework completed for 'Writing History: Theory and Practice' in Semester 1; and (c) a printed version (no longer than 3,000 words) of the paper given to the History Dissertation Workshop in Semester 2. Other supplementary materials may also be submitted when agreed with supervisors and the independent panel member. The School's Director of Graduate Studies will require that the review panel confirm in writing that (a)-(c) have been submitted and are judged as indicating a satisfactory level of progress before recommending that the student's probationary period be completed and registration for the degree of PhD be confirmed. |

Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course will have acquired well-developed skills in the presentation of research findings to a group of peers. In particular, they will:
o prepare and present their own work in seminars;
o develop an appreciation of the value of effective oral presentation of research;
o learn how to offer and respond to constructive feedback offered by peers;
o actively participate in group discussion.
