Summary | The course includes both soft and hard centred techniques together with background policy approaches appropriate for the management and control of natural resource use, particularly at a macro level. It draws on applied examples of resource use and misuse and provides students with the opportunity to inspect and resolve problem cases. It includes tool such as socio-economic flowcharts, stakeholder analysis, resource valuation methods, strategic environmental assessment, multi-criteria decision analysis, decision trees and cost benefit analysis. It also examines alternative instruments governing resource use within the context of current government policies. Case studies and computer practicals are included. |
Course description |
Following an introductory session, the course comprises of 2 broad sections separated by an intervening case visit:
Session 1 Resource use & resource user interactions, stakeholder analysis & flowcharts
Section 1 Policy options & approaches
Session 2 Overview of policy instruments governing resource use
Session 3 An introduction to Strategic Environmental Assessment
Session 4 Maintaining strategic resource supplies
Session 5 Integrated policy attempts
Session 6 Problems in resource valuation approaches
Case visit to Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park:
Session 7 Co-ordinating resource use in National Parks
Section 2 Management decisions support mechanisms
Session 8 Supporting better decision making
Session 9 Balancing welfare needs with environmental responsibility
Session 10 Dealing with multiple and conflicting objectives
Session 11 Further explorations of multi criteria decision analysis

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be expected to be able to:
1) appreciate the types of management approaches necessary for effective resource use
