Summary | This course introduces students to power electronic converters for high power systems and their use in a variety of renewable energy systems (solar PV, wind, wave and tidal power), and in power systems (FACTS, HVDC). Machine drives, including 4 quadrant operation control of both dc and induction machines are also covered. Different types of electrical generators used for renewable energy conversion are then studied, including switched reluctance machines, permanent magnet generators and linear generators. |

Lectures
L1-2 Inverters (Dr Ewen Macpherson)
Single and 3 phase inverters. Harmonics produced by inverters. Pulse Width Modulation techniques.
L3-7 Applications of High Power Electronics (Dr Ewen Macpherson)
Converters for Solar (PV) Systems. Uninterruptible Power Supplies. Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). Voltage Source HVDC systems.
L8-12 Machine Drives (Dr Ewen Macpherson)
4 quadrant operation; dc drives; closed loop control; induction motor drives; Double Fed Induction Generator (DFIG); stepper motor drives; brushless dc machines.
L13-22 Generators for Renewable Energy (Dr Markus Mueller)
switched reluctance motor drives; permanent magnet generator; Linear Generator.
