Summary | This course considers the key approaches to research in nursing and examines relevant methods of data collection and analysis and builds on the content in years 1 and 2. The course aims to familiarise students with a wide range of approaches and equip them with some basic research skills.
Reflexivity is considered in relation to understanding the impact of self, not only on research impartiality, but also on communication skills and interaction with others.
Rights and ethics of research subjects and the general public are considered in depth.
An introduction to data collection methods is seen as key, not only to research and its conduct, but also to many principles and skills of audit, data collection and analysis. |

Learning Outcomes
Theoretical: On completion of the course students will have gained the ability to:
* Apply principles of rights and ethics to differing research approaches
* Critically appraise the impact of reflexivity on the research process
* Apply research methods in nursing: experiments and quasi experiments including RCTs, surveys, evaluation research, case study research, participatory research, Mixed Methods, Ethnography, Phenomenology, Grounded Theory
* Apply research tools in nursing: Interviews, observation, focus groups, questionnaires, physiological measurement
* Identify the key principles of analysing quantitative and qualitative data
* Appraise the presentation of research data and findings
Practice:
* Recognise the effect of self on communication and interaction with others
* Conduct a short research interview in a simulated situation
* Analyse qualitative data from a one to one interview
* Analyse secondary data sets using a statistical package
