SummaryThis course embraces both creative work and the learning of technical skills. Inventiveness will be encouraged, while students will also be asked to carry out analyses and compositional exercises in various styles, using the works of past composers as sources and models.

Further study of 16th-century polyphony is undertaken, and the investigation of 18th-century techniques focuses on fugue and 3-part inventions.

Harmonic work builds on the fundamentals established in Style Studies 1, but introduces aspects of stylistic development from the nineteenth century. Particular emphasis is laid on the evolution of the language of chromaticism and a wider range of key relationships.
