Summary | This is one of the four Scottish Tourist Guides Association Core Knowledge courses that equip students with a broad understanding of the physical, cultural, archaeological, social, artistic and historical character of Scotland. These courses cover a broad and diverse range of subject areas and knowledge necessary for effective tourist guiding. This course will equip students to interpret landscape and explain the physical and natural environment of Scotland. |

¿ Demonstrate a broad awareness of the disciplines informing and shaping knowledge of Scotland¿s archaeology, history, culture, arts and landscapes
¿ Analyse and critically evaluate the debates on the physical and cultural identity of Scotland and deploy this knowledge clearly in an academic form
¿ Show the capacity to understand the chronological sequence of physical and social developments and make links across different domains of knowledge
Learning Outcomes for this specific course:
¿ Evidence a basic knowledge of the geological history of the different regions of Scotland and the influence of the underlying rocks on the development of landscape
¿ Demonstrate knowledge of the last Ice Age as it affected Scotland - the extent of ice cover, the effects of glacial erosion and deposition and the landforms produced
¿ Understand near-surface processes (weathering, erosion, soil development etc.) and their role in shaping landscape
¿ Describe the processes involved in forming coastal scenery and the effects of rivers and streams on the landscape
¿ Describe the key characteristics and typical flora and fauna of Scotland and their coastal and upland habitats
¿ Demonstrate an understanding of Scotland¿s various natural environments
¿ Understand the historical and current ecological issues concerning Scotland¿s natural landscapes
