Learning Outcomes
| On successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate in coursework and written examination, as well as in class discussion, that they have read substantial parts of Vergil's Eclogues and Georgics in Latin and have a thorough knowledge of the language, style and content of the texts; that they are acquainted with the social and political background of Vergil's early poetry; that they are familiar with elements of patronage and the production of literature in late Republican Rome; that they have a basic understanding of the literary and social conventions of Greek and Latin pastoral and didactic poetry; and that they are aware of various modes of representing thoughts formulated in the context of one language and culture through the medium of another language in a different cultural context.
