Summary | This course provides an introduction to the key texts, beliefs and practices of the religion of Islam. It begins with a methodological introduction and a historical introduction to the rise of Islam, the life of its Prophet and the early appearance of the main sectarian divisions. The nature and history of the Qur=an and the Hadith and particular aspects of Islamic practice and belief are then examined through a close reading of these sources. The second part of the course gives an introduction to religious law, theology, philosophy, Sufism and political thought from the earliest period to the present. The course will explore central themes in these fields, but will also focus on some narrower topics of interest, which may be relevant to the contemporary situation.
This course is based primarily on works translated into English. (No knowledge of Arabic required.)
