| Summary | This course will examine the murder of 6 million Jews and several million non-Jews by Nazi Germany. It will assess the progression from the stigmatisation, definition, expropriation and forced expulsion of Germany's Jews to the wartime policies of directed deportation and then murder of Jews and other 'racial enemies' across the European continent. Among the themes which may be considered are:
- The nature and roots of Nazi antisemitism
- The development of the 'Hitler state'
- The development of anti-Jewish policy between 1933 and 1939
- German plans to reorganise eastern Europe along 'racial' lines, 1939-41
- The 'euthanasia' programme in Germany
- Wartime radicalisation accompanying the invasion of the USSR in 1941
- The beginning and expansion of the process of mass murder, from mass shootings through the development of the extermination centres
- The motivation of the killers
- The responses of the victims
- Attitudes in other European countries and in the 'free world' |
