| Summary | This course, which runs fortnightly during both semesters, introduces students to postgraduate level independent research in Renaissance and Early Modern studies through a consideration of primary source materials. Taking advantage of the wealth of the collections in Edinburgh, classes will largely take place on site, and will include discussions of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, drawings and prints; manuscripts, maps and early printed books, archival documents, scientific documents and instruments, as well as a huge range of domestic, liturgical and other objects available at the National Galleries, Museums and Library of Scotland, as well as the University's own important collections. Curators, archivists and librarians at these institutions will be involved in the delivery of the course alongside lecturers from a variety of disciplines.
Students will learn practical skills in how to use various different types of evidence dating from this period, including paleography, which will equip them for independent research. We will also consider how this period is understood today, and what role cultural institutions such as Museums and Galleries have to play in forming this understanding. |

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have gained
- a good knowledge of the primary source material available in Edinburgh for research into the early modern period
- skills such as paleography, visual, literary and documentary analysis to enable them to use these sources to shed light on the period
- an interdisciplinary understanding of the major changes in European cultural life between the Renaissance to Enlightenment
- skills to undertake independent research in this field using a range of different primary material
- an insight into some of the issues relating to the current preservation and display of Renaissance/Early Modern materials, and different types of research required in fields such as academia, curatorship and cultural management.
