Additional Information (Assessment) |
Combined assessment methods including essays, short answer tests, multiple-choice questions, case reports, 360o feedback and work-based assessments are employed throughout the course. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and Structured Clinical Operative Tests (SCOTS) are used to determine clinical ability and progress, and a logbook of clinical work is kept which contributes to a personal portfolio and is assessed at the end of each semester. There are examinations at the end of each semester which must be passed satisfactorily before any student is permitted to continue to the next phase of study. |

Learning Outcomes
Students will be expected to:
¿apply their knowledge and understanding of biomedical sciences, oral biology and biomolecular sciences to the management of patients
¿recognise the changes that occur with normal growth and ageing and apply their knowledge in the management of the oral environment
¿have knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry relevant to dental hygiene and therapy
¿have knowledge and understanding of those aspects of the biomedical sciences and of oral physiology and craniofacial, oral and dental anatomy that are significant in the management of patients
¿have knowledge of the scientific principles of sterilisation, disinfection and antisepsis
¿be familiar with the place of dental hygiene and dental therapy in the provision of healthcare
¿be familiar with the main medical disorders that may impinge on dental treatment
¿be familiar with pathological features and dental relevance of common disorders of major organ systems
¿have knowledge of the aetiology, pathology, progression and presentation of periodontal diseases.
