Summary | The aims of this module are: 1) to explore the development of the person with particular reference to person-centred and psychodynamic perspectives; 2) to examine a variety of accounts of the origins and perpetuation of psychological difficulties; 3) to address the extent to which change and development is possible, with reference to the interplay of inner and outer worlds and the encounter with difference; 4) to clarify the meanings of the terms "self" and "person"; 5) to commence the practice placement and the work of the practice and process group. This module is only available to those students selected for and currently undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling. This module costs an additional 390 pounds. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- reflect on key concepts relating to the development of the self drawn from both person-centred and psychodynamic theories of the self
- integrate recent research findings relating to narratives of the self which inform understanding and practice
- demonstrate and conceptualise an understanding of personal narratives of difference and diversity and how these might impact on counselling work
