Summary | The aim of this course is to engage in a comparative study of translation practices and methods across religious traditions, with particular attention to examining how key translation issues are played out in the context of translating the 'sacred'. This course will explore how religions have adopted various strategies to negotiate a place for themselves amidst competing notions of the sacred in new cultures they enter. |

Learning Outcomes
* Understanding of how concepts and categories travel across languages and cultures and of how different religious traditions have conceptualised translation
* Critical examination of how translation concepts have developed historically and their links with the history of religious ideas
* Awareness of the diversity of approaches to translating religious texts/concepts
* Awareness that translations in religious contexts participate in a wide range of competing discourses outside the 'sacred' domain
* Critical and comparative analysis of the interface between religious traditions, literary cultures and cultural practices
* Experience in carrying out in-depth research on religious translation and capacity to formulate research questions and critical arguments
* Increased ability to apply and test theories in specific case studies
