SummaryThis course is a 3-month placement of 3rd year PhD students to work with a commercial partner. The range of potential placement destinations for students includes instrument manufacturers, technical consultancies, IP attorneys and policy advisors.

Students will work on a project for their placement hosts which is not necessarily related to their PhD research and which allows them the opportunity to experience a non-academic work environment. Students can expect to gain a first-hand experience of a range of perspectives on industrial practices, policy, innovation and entrepreneurship.

A set of objectives and a plan for the placement will be agreed between the student, the commercial supervisor and the academic supervisor prior to commencement. The student and both supervisors will meet 4 weeks into the placement to ensure that appropriate progress is being made and that no issues have arisen that put the student¿s progress at risk. On completion of the placement the student will write a report which will be assessed by both supervisors.
