SummaryThis course, together with Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year in Industry Level 11 (alongside which it must always be taken), constitutes a full-year of full-time placement work within an approved chemical company or research institute. Students spend 12 months working on a project related to chemistry or chemical physics while employed by an approved company or research institute.
Course description The two courses constitute the standard Year 4 curriculum for students on the following degree programmes: Chemistry with Industrial Experience, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry with Industrial Experience, Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry and Industrial Experience, and Chemical Physics with Industrial Experience. Students are recruited by companies on a competitive basis and are required to submit applications according to their interests and preferred geographical location, which may include overseas locations. Assessment consists of marks awarded for a written report of the project, a literature review and aspects of the performance on the placement.

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad Level 10 (CHEM10047) OR Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad Level 11 (CHEM11039) OR Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad with Industrial Experience Level 10 (CHEM10046) OR Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad with Industrial Experience Level 11 (CHEM11038)
Other requirements Students must have a weighted average of Grade C or higher in all Chemistry 3 courses AND a weighted average of Grade D or higher in Chemistry 3A and Chemistry 3B, at the first attempt OR Must have a weighted average of Grade C or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses AND a weighted average of Grade D or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses with degree examinations, at the first attempt.

Exceptionally, this course can be taken by a student who has failed to gain entry into Year 4 of an MChem or MChemPhys degree programme as part of a curriculum leading to the award of the BSc(Ord) in Chemical Sciences with Industrial Experience.

Feedback An academic supervisor visits each student during the placement and discussion of the student¿s progress takes place during a meeting with the placement supervisor. Written feedback is provided directly from academic supervisor to the student on the literature review and project report assignments. Written feedback is also returned to the student as part of the final assessment form.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a deep understanding of the chosen research area acquired through literature study and interaction with colleagues
  2. Show competence in a range of routine and advanced skills (technical, IT etc) by effectively applying academic knowledge in the research lab.
  3. Demonstrate advanced skills in critical analysis and interpretation of data, offering professional-level insight and showing creativity in problem solving.
  4. Communicate research findings at a professional standard through written and oral presentations and participate fully in group discussions.
  5. Adapt to an industrial work environment and to function effectively alongside qualified practitioners and gain the confidence to make independent decisions about the progress of the research project.
