SummaryA lecture course covering key areas of advanced physical chemistry, building on previous courses to provide an advanced treatment of the structure and chemistry of solids, surfaces, interfaces and gas-phase atoms, ions and molecules. The course comprises individual lectures on: Electrochemistry, Colloids, Solid State Chemistry, Surface Chemistry and Reaction Dynamics, Ions and Excited States. Either the Level 10 or Level 11 version of this course (as specified in the degree programme tables) is a compulsory requirement for Year 4/5 students on degrees in Chemistry and Chemistry with Materials Chemistry, but can be taken by Year 4/5 students on any Chemistry degree programme.

Other requirements Must include a weighted average of Grade D or higher in Chemistry 3A and Chemistry 3B, at the first attempt; OR a weighted average of Grade D or higher in all Chemical Physics Year 3 courses with degree examinations, at the first attempt; OR with the permission of Head of School.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- understand electrochemical kinetics, and the factors influencing the kinetics of reaction at an electrode
- discuss the techniques used to elucidate reaction mechanisms at electrodes
- appreciate the different types of colloid systems and the factors that determine their properties, interactions and stability
- describe the main experimental techniques used to characterise colloidal systems
- describe the principles of formation of point defects in ionic solids
- understand the mechanism of conductivity in ionic solids, and the ways in which chemists can design materials with enhanced solid state conductivity, and use them in electrochemical devices
- appreciate the physical structure of solid surfaces and the behaviour of gases on adsorption at surfaces
- discuss the physical basis and application of key spectroscopic and diffraction techniques in studying surfaces and molecules adsorbed thereon, including XPS, UPS, AES, SPM, EELS and RAIRS
- demonstrate how the concept of electronic configuration can be applied to the excited states of atoms and molecules
- describe the variety of new phenomena opened up by electronic excitation and ionisation processes
