SummaryA level 9 research project for visiting students. The research project may be in any area of chemistry carried out in the laboratory of, and supervised by, a member of the academic staff. The student is required to review the background of the research and to carry out appropriate analytical or experimental work before subsequently writing a report and making an oral presentation of the research before a small audience. The aim is to acquire the necessary skills to perform chemical research in a professional environment.

Additional Information (Assessment) This course is assessed entirely on the basis of coursework.
Feedback Feedback will be provided through regular meetings with the project supervisor and day-to-day interactions with the members of the research group. Feedback on written work will also be provided at the project report writing stage through proof-reading of a draft report.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Execute a defined project of research within an approved area of chemistry, working effectively under guidance and in ways which show a clear awareness of own and others' responsibilities and demonstrate skills in assessment of personal safety, and the safety of others, in the research environment
  2. Critically evaluate and interpret research literature in areas related to the project
  3. Show competence in a range of the principal technical skills (experimental and other) related to the project, and deliver accurate output of data and/or critical analysis commensurate with the length and level of the project and demonstrate some originality and creativity in offering interpretations of, and solutions to, problems and issues arising in the research
  4. Deliver a formal oral presentation of the context, output and impact of the research in a manner comprehensible to a chemically literate but non-specialist audience
  5. Write a detailed research report suitable for use by peers, senior colleagues and other specialists that demonstrates an understanding of the role of the research undertaken, and critical analysis of the data acquired

Graduate Attributes and Skills Experience of planning, execution and reporting (both in writing and orally) on a research project. Time management and team working skills. Experience of searching, interpreting and applying literature resources.
Additional Class Delivery Information Approximately 200 hours of student practical and oral and report preparation effort within times between January and May.
