| Summary | The course will consist primarily of close analytical readings of a range of novels and novellas by leading Gaelic prose writers from 1970 onwards, including Aonghas Pàdraig Caimbeul, Tormod Caimbeul, Iain Mac a' Ghobhainn (Iain Crichton Smith), Tormod MacGill-Eain and Norma NicLeòid. In addition to considering the dominant themes and questions addressed by these writers, the course will give close attention to questions of structure and narrativity, and the difficult evolution of new literary genres in Gaelic. The texts studied will be placed in the context of the work of other twentieth-century prose writers and of Gaelic literature and culture more generally. |

Learning Outcomes
| This course is intended to develop students' awareness of the thematic range, narrative devices and linguistic styles of important modern Scottish Gaelic novels and novellas, by a combination of close reading of primary texts, class discussion, and reference to relevant secondary literature.
