SummaryThe projects are being offered by Institute for Science and Technology Studies and EDPer (Edinburgh Physics Education Research). The project supervisor will undertake to instruct students on the analysis and research methods required for the project and this approach is consistent with their approach for students (on other programmes undertaking a Masters dissertation) with no previous knowledge of social science/science education research methodologies. In addition the projects will draw on the aggregated learning outcomes of the core courses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Science Communication/Public Engagement project: * Demonstrate critical analysis of relevant science communication literature. * Demonstrate ability to critically appraise public engagement case-studies and methodologies. * Demonstrate ability to apply conceptual tools and theoretical approaches for the study of public engagement from a social science perspective.
  2. Science Education Research Project: * Demonstrate ability to critically appraise science education literature. * Demonstrate application of research tools and strategies in investigating a problem/phenomenon in science education. * Demonstrate the interplay between formal and informal science learning and how science communication activities can enhance and enrich formal education.
