SummaryInfectious diseases are a major global concern and one that particularly imparts on developing nations. While safe and effective interventions exist many of those most in need lack access to appropriate health care, resulting in 11 million deaths per year and many more lives affected by reduced productivity and missed educational opportunities. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the major infectious diseases, with an emphasis on the challenges faced in terms of their treatment and prevention.
Course description This is an online course, as such the content is accessed over the internet through the University of Edinburgh web site. Therefore students will need to have access to a PC and the internet.
We will be assuming that students have the following:
Access to a PC and a familiarity with the operating system
Access to the internet through an up-to-date web browser. Students are expected to log on a minimum of 3 times a week; courses will be designed so that materials are accessible irrespective of the speed of the modem and the Internet Service Provider.
Familiarity with the internet (the ability to search, access and navigate through web pages).
For full access to all feature of the WebCT virtual learning environment a version of the Java Runtime Environment is also required to be installed;

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the global challenge of infectious disease.
  2. Appreciate the historical problems of neglected infectious diseases and the profound effects that the collapse of geographical space and increasing population growth have had on infectious disease epidemiology.
