Summary | The aims of this course are to demonstrate, through lectures and facilitated group discussions, the scientific basis of modern medicine; and the role of basic biological sciences in advancing medical knowledge. concise write-ups of three Facilitated Group Discussion topics, expressing an argued viewpoint on the topics chosen (1x3%, 1x7%, 1x10%); give a group presentation (5%).
2 hour Examination (60%): Multiple Choice Questions (1 hour) and Extended Matching Questions (1 hour). |

Learning Outcomes
The intended learning outcomes are to enable students (a) to understand the biological basis of a number of diseases of current interest, and the advance in biological knowledge in areas relevant to these; (b) to develop skills in assimilation of information related to particular research topics and balanced discussion in a group setting; and (c) to develop skills in the experimental design of a practical project, working within a group or a team, and in the collection, analysis and presentation of class data.

Facilitated Group Discussion: Tues 10-11am, Tues 11-12pm, Wed 3-4pm, Fri 4-5pm.
Practical: students attend one one hour practical. Tues 10-11, 11-12 or Wed 10-11, 11-12 in wks 2,3&4.
Students sign up for FGDs & Practicals in week 1 via webCT.
