Summary | This course provides series of workshops and tutorials to the first year MA Japanese and MA Japanese and Linguistics students for essential practical skills and tips of learning Japanese as independent learners, as well as workshops as the first year preparation of the year abroad in Japan in their third year.
This course is not available to visiting students or non-honours students.

Introduction: 1 hour
Workshop 1: How to use VLE and learning technology at UoE (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 2 compulsory hours)
Workshop 2: How to write Japanese characters on computers (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 2 compulsory hours)
Workshop 3: How to use mobile devices for language learning (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 3 compulsory hours)
Workshop 4: Make an online presentation (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 3 compulsory hours)

Additional Information (Assessment) |
Work will be assessed in two ways:
i. By attending and participating actively in the tutorial sessions (11 hours in total) for all components in Semester 1 and Semester 2.
ii. By completing the regular assignments and assessments during the tutorial session(s) for the relevant component, such as reports, language quizzes and tests, presentations. The completion of the tasks are compulsory. If students miss any compulsory element of sessions/tasks, they need to arrange another time to complete them.
A pass for the course is normally required to progress to the second year of the MA Honours in Japanese and MA Honours in Japanese and Linguistics programmes.

Learning Outcomes
Students will develop basic knowledge of using online resources, dictionaries, computer writing that are essential for learning Japanese. Sometimes speaking, listening, writing and reading skills will be covered depending on the tasks.
