Course description | Since place-names form an important aspect of Scottish culture, this half-course is organised along the lines of a systematic survey of Scottish names, with a very strong emphasis on regional studies. With five major languages forming the basis of Scottish place-names, the course surveys the major place-name elements present in Cumbric, Pictish, Gaelic, English/Scots and Old Norse, all of which provide substantial evidence for the presence of speakers of these languages. There is a substantial part of the course devoted to the examination of source material such as historical documents, early and modern maps, and the importance of oral tradition in the preservation of early names. There is a short section on personal-names, minor names and field-names. |
