| Course description | This course will critically examine the way Scotland portrays and has portrayed itself through visual media. The overall intention is to arrive at a critical understanding of the contribution visual productions make to concepts like nationhood, identity, heritage, tradition and cultural difference. We will also seek to arrive at an appreciation of the power, resonance and continuing influence these productions exert. Drawing upon a wide range of examples from films, documentaries and other visual media past and present we will explore how Scotland presents itself to itself; how Scotland presents itself to an external audience and how Scotland is represented visually by an external audience. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should have:
- an understanding of the critical techniques involved in analysing and critically interpreting visual media;
- actively engaged with core texts and other media relating to cultural expression and identity within a Scottish and comparative context;
- developed a critical appreciation of the relationship between visual representation and identity formation in the Scottish context;
- gained experience of producing critical texts on key issues and problems through course work tasks;
- enhanced confidence in group discussion participation and presentation of ideas. |
